The Department of Rural Development and Land Reform and the International Cartographic Association (ICA), with support from CONSAS, will present a one-day workshop on modern cartography. The workshop will be presented by three eminent, internationally-renowned academics in the field of cartography and who are leaders in the ICA.
This course provides a general introduction to Remote Sensing, GIS and ERDAS IMAGINE for users with limited or no experience of the software. At the end of the course participants will be familiar with using the software and have a good understanding of its capabilities.

The purpose of this course is to teach the basic principles of Geographic Information Systems (GIS), including both the theoretical background and a hands-on component, illustrating the theoretical concepts in practice.
This course provides a practical introduction to PostgreSQL with PostGIS, covering the following major themes of spatial databases: installing and configuring PostGIS, viewing PostGIS data in a desktop GIS, spatial SQL queries, spatial joins and spatial indexing. Although the theory is explained, most of the time during the course will be spent on practical examples, ensuring that delegates understand how to view spatial data, query spatial databases, etc. The course aims to equip the delegates with the necessary skills and knowledge to use spatial databases in the daily operations of their respective jobs.
During this course the practical use of geographic information standards will be demonstrated. Upon completion of the course, delegates will know how to read, interpret and implement a geographic information standard. A selected number of ISO/TC 211 and South African national standards, such as ISO 19115, Geographic Information - Metadata, the South African address standard (SANS 1883) and some OGC web service standards, will be studied during the course.

Save the Date. The Esri Africa User Conference will be held from the 11 - 13 November 2015. Hosted by Esri South Africa, the Esri AUC will bring the world's geospatial leaders to the continent. Esri president Jack Dangermond will give a Keynote Address, and experts from Esri will share the latest uses of GIS technology. In addition to the three-day conference, specialized preconference seminars and hands-on training sessions will be offered. The seminars and training will be held on Tuesday, 10 November. We look forward to having you join us in Cape Town!
