Introduction to GIS & GPS

This course will guide students through the process of preparing, analysing and interpreting spatial data with the aid of spatial analysis tools. The course also serves as a foundation for our intermediate level GIS course, Hydrological modelling and terrain analysis using digital elevation models, which will be run from 12 – 14 June 2018.

OUTLINE OF COURSE CONTENT

The following topics will be covered in the course:

  • History and theory of GIS and GPS
  • Theory of spatial data structures; raster vs vector data formats; representing features as points, lines and polygons; coordinate reference systems
  • Exploration of modern GIS and GPS systems; using ArcGIS to load, explore, and display spatial data; panning, zooming, layer visibility, layer properties; using a GPS to map spatial coordinates
  • Working with data layers
  • Symbolisation of spatial data
  • Spatial analysis
  • Interpretation of spatial analysis
  • Map design

  • Environmental Consultants; Conservationists.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Senior certificate or equivalent qualification.

COURSE STRUCTURE AND VENUE

A comprehensive five day course with theory, practical exercises, field work, group assignments and assessments will be presented at the Centre for Environmental Management (CEM) and the Computer Laboratory at the UFS. The course will be presented using ArcGIS 10.5.

ACCREDITATION

The University of the Free State is an accredited higher education provider.

NQF LEVEL AND ASSESSMENT TYPE

NQF Level 5. Assessment will be done through practical assignments and class presentations. Attendance certificates will be awarded by the UFS after completion of course.

COURSE FEE

(CEM at UFS is exempt from VAT)
R7 500 per delegate.
All course notes, refreshments and a light lunch are included.
